Several months ago Kody started looking into beekeeping. Something he could do on the side of farm work that would be just our own thing and be some extra money in the winter time.
With the detail and thought process he puts into things, he laid out a 5 year plan for bees and got to work. We took a chunk of our tax return and bought 20 nukes (a Queen bee and about 5-10 thousand bees per nuke). He got lumbar and wood at Home Depot and started building the boxes/hives. He's worked on them for the past few months, and we finished the first 20 hives a couple of days ago because our bees came yesterday.
There are 4 hives on a base, and we will just add boxes on top as we need to, and build more bases in the future.
It got a little crazy working with about 200,000 bees, but as usual Kody was a trooper and did awesome! He only got stung about 6 times. Good thing he's not allergic! :)
Kody had a bunch of bees on his back once he was done with the hive work. Seriously, it was a lot! So he had to get them away from him some how so that he could take the suit off. Watching him do it was pretty funny! :)
One of the stings was on his ring finger. It swelled up pretty good, all the stings did. But because he had his ring on, it started getting too tight and slowing the blood flow. He tried a couple different ways to get the ring off, but it wasn't budging. So he had to use a dremmel tool which is like a tiny grinder to cut through the ring. The friction made the ring so hot he could only do it a few second at a time and then he would have to put his hand on frozen peas to cool it off. It was a process, but he got it off! Now he'll get to soder the ring back together and wear it again !
An Ag group from Washington State University asked if they could put up a hoop house greenhouse on the farm for research purposes. So Kody and their group leader Jeremy have been working on it for a few days. It's a 30'X90' hoop house. It's really big, but will be awesome to use! We'll get to plant, grow, and harvest the food and the Ag group will takes notes and do the research on how it goes. We'll be putting the plastic on it soon.
