Planting the Gardens

The months of May and June are planting season. So much work goes into getting the gardens ready. Lots of tractor work to start with. Gotta disk the ground, and make the raised rows.

Then it's time to lay the drip lines on each row.

Then the "fun" part is laying the plastic and shoveling by hand 100's of shovel loads of dirt onto the plastic so it doesn't blow away. This is where the men and separated from the boys, and the girls are separated form the sissys. :)

Some of the wee ones still need a little help though :)

When transplanting tomatoes, we put tin cans around the when they're small so the wind doesn't blow them over. Grammy looked like someone for the movie "Robots" when carrying the tin cans. Grammy started about 900 tomato plants in the greenhouse in February.  I think we transplanted about 700 of them. Of course some didn't make it, and some die off later, but the majority survive and we ended up with upteen tomatoes.

Of course once the plants come up, there's lots of weeding involved. Everyone has to help in the 3 acre garden t keep the weeds under control.

And it's lovely to see some of the plants get taller than you as they grow. Our corn was defiantly "knee high by the 4th of July." In fact, it was over 6 ft tall by then.
